We are Happy You're Here
Welcome to our nonprofit therapeutic equestrian center! We are dedicated to providing a safe and fun experience for children and adults with physical, emotional, or developmental challenges. Through the power of equine-assisted therapy, we aim to improve the lives of our participants and promote their overall well-being. We understand the unique benefits that horses can offer in the healing process. Spending time with Nutmeg, brushing, petting , walking with her, helps strength and coordination. Bonding with an animal helps to increase emotional resilience, and in fostering social connections. We believe in the transformative power of the human-animal bond, and Nutmeg plays a crucial role in the healing and happiness of individuals going through a trying time.
"Nutmeg is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and help to leave your troubles behind, if even for a short time."
Horses are intuitive animals that become trusted partners and sources of comfort for our participants. The bond that develops between our participants and the horses helps to facilitate healing, boost self-confidence, and enhance communication skills. Safety is our utmost priority. Our center adheres to strict safety protocols, ensuring that both our participants and Nutmeg are in a secure and controlled environment.
Nutmegs partner, Sandie, is a retired nurse with over 40 years experience working with individuals with diverse challenges.
As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the support of our community to continue providing our services free of charge or at a reduced cost to those in need. We are grateful for the generosity of our donors, volunteers, and sponsors who help us make a difference in the lives of our participants. Together, we can empower individuals with challenges to overcome obstacles, discover their strengths, and embrace a brighter future. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey of healing, growth, and hope. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about opportunities to volunteer, donate and support our mission.
Together, we can make a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.
Meet Sandie
"Hi! My name is Sandie, and I have been in love with horses for as long as I can remember. Some would say ‘obsessed’ and they probably would be right! While volunteering at Avalon Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Wisconsin, I was encouraged and supported by the owners, Barb and John Williamson, to pursue a dream. I was able to combine my love of horses and people when I became a NARHA certified riding instructor. I then was able to teach therapeutic riding to children and adults with physical, emotional, or developmental challenges at Avalon. I also became their volunteer coordinator and had never met such a selfless dedicated group of people. I eventually moved to Asheville NC, and when I retired as an oncology nurse, I found my little partner Nutmeg. I knew from her sweet and nurturing demeanor, I would be able to dedicate my passion for helping others full time.I love every minute!"

"As A Retired Oncology Nurse, I Realized That Nutmeg Has The Perfect Temperament To Be A Therapy Horse"
~SandieMany people have the heart to help someone, some people have a calling. My mother has both. She is a selfless person who always puts someone else’s needs before her own. This program that she started is something that is both sad (because it’s needed in our sometimes selfish society) and a blessing to the people that she brings smiles and happy memories too. I encourage you to send her a message and see what these amazing creatures can do to bring a smile to your face even when you think that nothing will and remember, treat others as you would want them to treat you.
